Religion tells us that, no bones about it, we are not perfect. Right out of the gate, we’ve been stained by the sins of the first parents, Adam and Eve, deceived by the evil one but allowed by the Almighty. Regardless of the religion, the primary purpose is communion with the one truly perfect being, God. As usual, however, when groups of people come together, they decide their way is better or more normal than everyone else’s and that everyone else must be evil and should die. Well, not every religion, but each religion has at one time or another deemed non-believers in league with Satan and ruthlessly and unjustly destroyed. While I don’t believe that God, as all-powerful as He is, needs Humans to go about picking fights for him, I do appreciate the understanding that perfection is not to be found in Humanity regardless of how “good” we are to one another, how many prayers we repeat, how much money we give to the church or charity or whether we believe ourselves chosen. The religions that truly want us to love one another in all our brokenness are the ones based on what an enlightened vision of God is.
